Dear {name}, after a short break during the month of July – which we've used to freshen up the Farmhouse – we're gearing up for a new season. To ease into spring, and dust off the old winter cold, we've decided to keep our special full-board and self-catering rates for SA locals up until 30 September – a great opportunity to get the full BK experience at a reduced cost, especially for those that will be attending our Smoke & Fire food event on 26 AugustIn addition, we will be offering special lunches alongside our popular Sunday Lunch at the Deckhouse. Oh ... and we have some news about the nature reserve, and as well we turn the spotlight on Mariske, our lodge anchor.

We hope to be welcoming you at Bartholomeus Klip again soon. Love from the BK team xx

[ HOW TO GIVE WINGS TO TORTOISE HATCHLINGS ]

Er ... no, this isn't Louise foraging for unexplored ingredients for the next Smoke & Fire extravaganza on 26 August. In fact, it's not even Louise, it's Lesley ... or wait, is it? ? ? ???

In fact, it is Louise, helping out with another successful release of a clutch of Geometric Tortoises on Elandsberg Nature Reserve. These critically endangered tortoises were raised in the headstart breeding programme run by Jackie and Bernard at the Elandsberg Nature Reserve in an attempt to bolster the natural population after a devastating veld fire in 2012. After several years under managed conditions, the hatchlings that have reached a certain size and weight are released back into the reserve. It is hoped that these are large enough to be predator proof, and will start breeding a year or two after being set free.

[ NEW SEASON ] The spring flowers have started to announce the end of winter. This is a very special time to visit BK: the annual flower season that extends all over the Swartland and West Coast makes the Elandsberg Nature Reserve and the farmlands around BK particularly idyllic. If you've ever dreamed of sharing in the BK experience, now is the time: we're offering special rates (almost 50% off) to SA locals up until 30 September.

  • Full-board room at the Farmhouse : R2,600 per person per night sharing
  • Self-catering Heron House (midweek) : R4,655 per night for the house (sleeps 12)
  • Self-catering Wild Olive House (midweek) R 3,110 per night for the house (sleeps 6)

[ LAST CHANCE ] Only a few seats left! For this latest edition of our Smoke & Fire food experience, host Lesley and BK resident chef Louise have turned to France for inspiration: vintage, unashamedly pretentious French cuisine, served at social tables around the lush Bartholomeus Klip gardens. As usual, guests can expect a whirlwind of flavours, colours, smells, textures, and sounds – all connected somehow by the classic central African theme of cooking on fire. And it gets better … the proudly Swartland-based wine-making duo David and Nadia will be keeping your glasses topped up with some of their best locally grown and produced wines.

[ LUNCH & SUPPER ] In addition to our three-course lunch and dinner at the Farmhouse Conservatory restaurant, we will be offering a range of special food events in the next couple of months:

[ @elandsbergnr ] Are you following BK game rangers Bernard and Jackie on instagram.com/elandsbergnr/ yet?

Follow them for regular updates about the Elandsberg Nature Reserve, including news about the Quagga Project, the Geometric Tortoise Rehabilitation Programme, the unique elandsmontana plant species, and much more ...

[ IN THE SPOTLIGHT ] Mariske’s international experience, spanning ten years and various locations – including Buffelsdrift, Inverdoorn, and Woodbridge in South Africa, and Fathala Wildlife Reserve in Senegal – make her an indispensable and versatile asset to the high conservation and hospitality standards we aim for at BK.

A certified and well-experienced tracker and guide, Mariske can be found guiding guests in the Elandsberg Nature Reserve, processing admin at the office, and serving drinks at the restaurant – all in a day’s work. You guessed it, that’s Mariske with an “M” for multitasking ;-)
